Operating System
XStat runs with Windows 9x, ME, NT 4 (SP6), 2000 and XP Server or Workstation.
A common desktop machine is sufficient.
Database
XStat uses a SQL database to store it's statistics information.
This can be either Microsoft SQL Server 7 or 2000 (or later versions) or
the MSDE (Microsoft Data Engine) The MSDE is not part of the downloadable version
of XStat, but is available on the product CD, which can be ordered seperately.
When use MSDE, when use SQL Server?
MSDE is the free desktop version of MS SQL Server. It runs on all Windows versions
listed beyond and doesn't require a server version of Windows NT, Windows 2000 or
the .NET Server 2003 but may be installed on a server anyway.
The MSDE has some drawbacks compared to the Server version:
The size of a particular database is limited to 2 GB and
multiuser acess is limited to 5 connections.
If your logfiles created by XWall (named SRyymmdd.csv) are smaller than 5 MByte per day,
there's no problem using the MSDE.
If you have heavy eMail traffic in terms of many messages and big log files, you should use MS SQL
Server which has to be purchased seperately, allthough you still can use MSE but you have to
watch the database size and delete log data you don't use anymore.
The database may run on the same machine where XStat is installed or may run on a
different machine, wich is accessible over the network.
To achieve the best performance, it's recommended to install the database (MSE or Server) on
a powerful machine with at least 256 MB RAM and a minimum speed of 1.5 GHz.
Further requirements
To be able, to access the database, the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.5 or higher
have to be installed on the client PC where XStat runs.
If you download the regular version of XStat, the MDAC are included and automatically installed
on your system. In the small version (only spoken in terms of download size an duration, functionality is the same)
MDAC are not include an the have to be downloaded separately.
MDAC contain the MS SQL Server drivers (and other components) and are either preinstalled on
Windows 2000 or XP or can be downloaded at
www.microsoft.com.
How do I know if the MDAC are installed on my machine?
Open the ODBC driver manager via the control panel (or run odbcad32.exe) and choose the "Drivers" pane which lists all installed
ODBC drivers. If you see an entry "SQL Server" with the version showing at least 3.x or better 2000.x at
the bottom of the list, everything's OK.
